Now this sounds like my kind of party! (Thanks to Davo for the link on that one).

Dont think retro fashion, think RETRO GEEK! Vintage computing and gaming meets arcades and the finest local and international live acts for a night of blistering beats, acid, techno, breaks and console bleeps. Get down to the big ass bass or blister those thumbs on a NES, Atari, C64, Neo Geo or any of many other gaming flashbacks powered up and on site for those of us who were more geeking up at home then doing the John Travolta…. screw the 80′s… insert coin to play!

MAME 0.79 released

3
Feb/04
1

MAME 0.79 was released 31th January. Of note is the changes to the memory management:

Another big memory change. [Aaron Giles]

The biggest change is the way address maps are declared in the drivers. Rather than having separate read and write address maps, there is now support for a single, merged map. In order to minimize the amount of code churn, there is currently still support for two separate address maps per address space, but they are combined into one internally early on in the memory initialization and setup.

Other changes to it are as follows:

New Games supported or promoted from GAME_NOT_WORKING status:

  • Scramble Spirits
  • Triv Four (1985 Status)
  • Super Triv III (1986 Status)
  • Winning Spike
  • Whizz
  • More More Plus
  • Pairs Love

New Clones supported or promoted from GAME_NOT_WORKING status:

  • Perestrokia Girls (without Fuuki license)
  • Changes (EME license)
  • VS. Tennis (Japan)
  • Dual Assault

New Non-Working games / clones supported:

  • Varia Metal
  • Denjin Makai (protected)
  • Super Hang On Limited Edition
  • Plasma Sword (parent to Star Gladiator 2)

Speeding up MAME compiles

I must remember this for the next time that I’m compiling XMAME. Apparently adding "-fno-merge-constants" to your CFLAGS can make linking go down from a few minutes to a few seconds.

Recently I purchased volume 3 of the Edge Retro special. I really liked the cover art (being the big fan of pixel art that I am!), which I found out was by Gunstar-Red. He also has a great website over at Army of Trolls.

XMAME 0.78.1 released

16
Jan/04
0

Looks like XMAME slipped out the other day. Changes in this version are:

  • Everything from MAME 0.78 and MESS 0.78.You can now “make tools” without first having to “make osdepend”. Fixed a couple of minor problems with src/unix/Makefile and src/unix/unix.mak. (Adam Di Carlo)
  • Rearranged a bit of code to allow the MESS tools to build.
  • Added JOY_SDL to the makefile so that the SDL joystick plugin can be enabled for non-SDL targets. The SDL target still enables the plugin without requiring JOY_SDL to be set.
  • The ALSA module now builds against ALSA 1.0. Fixes Bugzilla bug 501.
  • Changed the abbreviation of “-pause_brightness” to “-pbrt” to prevent a conflict with “-playback”.
  • Added double buffering, enabled via “-doublebuf”, to the SDL target. (Thomas Jarosch)
  • Deprecated the SDL target’s “-modenumber” in favor of “-vidmode_w” and “-vidmode_h”. (Thomas Jarosch)
  • Updated the included zlib library to 1.2.1, which should be faster than 1.1.4.
  • Fixed an infrequent spurious error reported by zlib 1.2.1. (Mark Adler)
  • OpenVMS support should be close now. (Robert Alan Byer)
  • Changed the man path to $(PREFIX)/man/man6, which is more FHS-compliant according to Andre Majorel.

The source is available over here. Its looks like there is no RPM packages from FreshRPMs yet though. For the list of newly supported games, refer to my previous post on the release of MAME 0.78,

MAME.dk offline

Currently the excellent MAME information and ROM repository MAME.dk is offline. It would appear that their web hosting company went bust.

Update 08/Dec/2003: For those of you who desperately want MAME.dk back, and can’t figure out how to find ROMs by any other means, you can either hit up Usenet (alt.binaries.emulators.mame) or hookup with a ROM burner in your area. Also other suggested reading is alt.games.mame on Usenet. Also this site looks like it could be good for getting individual ROMs.

XMAME 0.76.1 Released

29
Oct/03
1

XMAME 0.76.1 finally was released on Sunday. FreshRPMS has updated RPMS for RedHat users, and also the packages for the great GTK+ based frontend gxmame has been updated to handle the changes to some of the switches which were introduced in MAME 0.74.

Also worth mentioning is a new(ish) site; MameDB. Since the demise of Mame.dk, there hasn’t been a site which has all the information on the games provided in the accessable format which Mame.dk provided. MameDB is there to fill that gap.

New games for MAME 0.76 are as follows

Pay-Per-Download ROM service launched

Oct/03

Usually if you want to get arcade ROM files for your arcade emulator you have to go to sites which have questionably legality. Now you can purchase ROMs legally for personal use from Star ROMs. They currently have around 60 games (all them seem to be Atari games at the moment) such as 720 Degrees, Asteroids, Gauntlet, Marble Madness and Missile Command.

XMAME 0.74.1 released

16
Sep/03
0

A new version of XMAME has finally been released. You can grab a patch against 0.72.1 or the full tarball. I guess it should only be a matter of time when the FreshRPMs packages are done.

Changes since 0.72.1:

  • Everything from MAME 0.74 and MESS CVS.
  • Reapplied David Mitchell’s fix for the XInput inertial effect when a mouse or spinner is used. (Jake Stookey)
  • Added support for controllor setup via “-ctrlr“. Note that “-hotrod” and “-hotrodse” have been replaced by “-ctrlr HotRod” and “-ctlrlr HotRodSE“.
  • Added support for the Sun Forte 7 C compiler. (Greg Menke)
  • Added support for Mesa and Sun OpenGL on Solaris. (Greg Menke)

*sigh* My MAME collection is still sitting back at 0.71, and I haven’t had a chance to get all the updates of 0.72 and 0.73. One day. Looks like 0.74 is more of a minor update/bugfix from 0.73. According to MAME.dk the following has been added:

  • Apocaljpse Now
  • Bang! (japan)
  • Dancing Eyes (DC1/VER.A)
  • Explorer
  • Hangly-Man (set 3)
  • Quiz & Variety Sukusuku Inufuku (Japan)
  • MegaTech: Afterburner
  • MegaTech: The Revenge Of Shinobi
  • MegaTech: Shinobi
  • Kosodate Quiz My Angel 3 (KQT1/VER.A)
  • Natsuiro Mahjong (Japan)
  • Ojanko Club (Japan)
  • Miyasu Nonki no Quiz 18-Kin
  • Super-X (NTC)
  • Super-X (Mitchell)

The Windows version of MAME can downloaded over here. Unfortunately MacMAME and XMAME haven’t been updated since 0.71 and 0.72 respectively. :(
