Animal-Human Hybrids Spark Controversy

I’m usually pretty open minded when it comes to new stuff thats occuring in the field of genetics, but this is the first time that I can remember that I really thought “errgh”.

I used to grow embryonic stem cells on a dish in the lab just to test stuff on ‘em. Some of the embryonic cells developed into myocardial cells (heart cells) and started beating. They beat on the dish! You look at the cell and it’s moving. It’s freaky I tell ya. Then they get old and die.

If you can get the embryonic stem cells to make a very pure, pure tissue type then you can save lives. Instead you just get this weird mixture of cells happening. Nobody can control how they differentiate. Though sometimes they can make them go one way or the other, I think with nervous tissue you can make it happen. I know with cartlige to a certain extent you can.

A full on human chimera would be pretty bad. I think the ethics are different in China.
